Antique English Pictorial Codd Bottle - Pratt & Son, Manchester

Available is an antique aqua glass Codd bottle. Raised letters read "Pratt & Son, Manchester" encircling an image of an arm holding a hammer.

This bottle was salvaged from a Victorian dump site in England. Good antique condition with glass marble intact.

Codd bottles have a fascinating history. In 1872, Hiram Codd developed a glass bottle with a pinched neck and marble that used the pressure from the carbonated beverages inside the bottles to create a self-sealing closure. The pressure from the beverages would press the marble up against the opening.

To open the drink, one only needs to use a firm finger or stick to push against the marble to release some gas and open the top to make it drinkable. The pinched neck kept the marble from blocking the flow of liquid as it was drunk.
