The center panel shows him bent over his worktable, with a beautifully designed border, all in black transfer on white porcelain. Backstamp reads "Opaque Sarreguemines."
French conversation plates were popular decorative items throughout Europe in the 19th century. Plates were usually issued in sets of 6-12, with each plate showing a unique scene. Common themes included military events, provincial life, fables and legends, religious stories, and historical figures.
Today they make charming wall accents and hutch displays, continuing their role as conversation starters for a new generation of antique lovers.
