Antique Moody Coastal Scene with Fishing Boats, c1900

Available is an original oil on stretched canvas of a British coastal scene with fishing boats. Dark moody clouds set the backdrop for boats in various stages of repair, with small figures set in and around the scene. A wood hut sits on the side of the cliff, overlooking the sea. The colors are muted and warm, with careful brushwork and layered details.

The scene is strikingly similar to a work by British maritime artist Richard Nibbs (1816-1893), called Preparing and Repairing Boats. This may have been a student copy, produced as part of the artist's education in studying master artists in order to improve their craft.

The canvas is on stretchers, with original stretcher keys. The back of the canvas is stamped with the Winsor & Newton trademark, dating the canvas to c1900. There are two small tears (<1 inch each) to the top center of the canvas. No signature visible. Unframed.
