This is an antique Henshall corkscrew with a wooden handle and brush. The design, patented by Reverend Samuel Henshall in 1795, was the first patented corkscrew in England. It features a distinctive disc or cupule above the helix (worm) to help compress and rotate the cork for extraction. The brush on the handle was used to dust off the top of the wine bottle before opening.

Verdigris and corrosion remains on the underside of the disc after cleaning. Soft patina and wear to the wood handle. Great piece of collectible barware.

Sourced from England.

Dimensions

Handle 4" long
5" tall
Weighs 2 oz.
