Edwardian Lignum Vitae Lawn Ball on Wooden Stand

Handcrafted in the late 19th or early 20th century, this historic gaming piece features deep concentric grooving and a distinctive, inset bone monogram disc at its center. Its naturally rich, dark color tones make it a stunning standalone sculptural object. The ball comes complete with its custom-turned, matching circular wooden base, presenting it perfectly for desktop display, open shelving, or use as a unique bookend.

These antique lawn bowls were traditionally turned from Lignum Vitae, an extraordinarily dense and heavy exotic hardwood native to the Americas that is celebrated for its self-lubricating oils and extreme durability.

During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, British and Scottish craftsmen favored this rare wood because its immense weight allowed the bowls to navigate grass greens smoothly without cracking upon impact. Makers intentionally carved each ball with an asymmetrical shape—known as a bias—causing it to follow a curved path as it rolled.

The inset ivory or bone center discs were custom-engraved with numbers or letters so players could easily identify their personal sets during matches.

Condition: Excellent antique condition, with minimal scuffing and wear. The lawn ball is removable from the base. Base has blue felt on bottom. One side of the ball has a monogram set into the bone inlay.
