Available is an early 20th century stoneware jar, produced by Sainsbury's to hold bloater paste. Bloater paste is a herring paste, made from a recipe developed in the 1890s. It was marketed as a "tasty tea-time treat on toast."
This jar is an excellent example of the type used during the interwar period between 1920-1940. Strong lettering and graphics, with the monogram "S" decorated with a thistle flower.
Crazing and light staining throughout, with a dark red-orange stain on one side. This is the more unusual tall shape, 4 oz size. Imported from England.
